In order to advance his brother he conveyed to him, without the consent of the monastery, several estates. As in the previous case, a composition was effected between Guthmund, the late abbot's brother, and the monks, whereby he was to retain the lands for his life. But, as before, these lands were alienated after the Conquest, and never recovered. Abbot #Thurstan# (1066-1072) was appointed by King Harold, and was the last Saxon abbot.
